The Trench Coat: a Wardrobe Essential
The trench coat is a versatile layer for spring and autumn, bridging the gap between a warm winter coat and a lighter blazer. What is a trench coat, where did it come from and why does it belong in a wardrobe? Read on for its history, styling ideas and advice on colour.

From military uniform to a civilian classic
The name 'trench coat' recalls its military roots in the First World War. This sturdy, weather-resistant outer layer soon became popular beyond the armed forces.

Thomas Burberry, founder of the company bearing his name, is associated with an early version of the trench coat. Its signature checked lining later became closely identified with the brand.

Early versions used treated wool or cotton gabardine for protection from rain. Khaki was common, while today's trench coats also come in beige, navy and black.
Epaulettes and collar: reminders of military origins
Epaulettes, a high collar and metal D-rings on the belt recall the trench coat's military past. The rings could hold equipment; khaki helped soldiers blend into their surroundings. Today beige and light brown are common, but navy and black are options too.

Many original details had a purpose. Buttoned pockets protected their contents, and a double-breasted fastening helped block the wind. D-rings carried equipment, epaulettes indicated rank and cuff straps helped keep out rain and wind.

How to wear a trench coat today

-
With a suit: A trench coat pairs naturally with a suit. Beige or navy works with traditional suit colours.
