How to Care for Leather Shoes
Every gentleman knows that quality leather shoes are a wardrobe essential. But you have to care for them. Even the most luxurious pair will do little for your image if it looks neglected. Not everyone has a professional shoe shiner on hand, so here is how to look after your shoes at home and make the most of your investment.
1. Cleanliness comes first
Clean shoes make a good impression. The first rule is simple: clean them regularly.
Daily cleaning
You do not need to spend hours on shoe care. Before going out, check your shoes, wipe them with a cloth if needed and give them a quick brush.

2. Protect the leather
In winter, one of the biggest risks to leather shoes is drying out. Driving rather than walking does not eliminate the problem.
Rain and snow
A few steps through rain or snow can soak your shoes. Although leather may withstand some stresses better than synthetic materials, repeated wetting can still shorten its life.
The most important thing you can do for your shoes is replenish the moisture the leather needs, and do so often enough.

Tip: a natural product with beeswax
As with the shoes themselves, do not cut corners on care products. Natural products, ideally containing beeswax, help protect the leather, restore its sheen and leave a pleasant scent.
3. Do not crush the heel
How you put on your shoes matters more than you might think.
A shoehorn
Stepping down on the back of a shoe damages its shape and appearance. A shoehorn makes putting it on quick and helps protect the heel.

4. Help your shoes keep their shape
Shoe trees are another tool that can make a difference to the life of your shoes, yet they are often overlooked.
A master shoemaker we know recommends leaving shoe trees in for at least 24 hours. This gives the shoes time to dry properly and regain their shape, helping to prevent cracks.
Regular care helps keep the shoes in good condition.

How many pairs? At least two!
A gentleman should have at least two pairs to alternate every other day. We recommend black and brown. Just as one outfit does not suit every occasion, one pair of shoes is rarely enough.
A few final tips:
- Choose a timeless shoe style so it lasts beyond a single season.
- Different suit colours call for different shoe colours.
- Match your dress shoes to the colour of your belt.
- For a considered look, coordinate them with your watch strap and bag or briefcase too.
